<itunes:summary>I was sitting at my favorite coffee shop yesterday having a conversation about a friendrsquo;s new Mac Pro that had decided to stop working. I was on You Tube the night before in a Mashup vortex. I really like the Freemasons, based out of the UK. I think it is their retro old school house and disco vibe. I stumbled upon my favorite Mashup of all time, the Micheal Jackson - Rock With You (Freemasons Remix) 2008.

Micheal Jackson - Rock With You (Freemasons Remix) 2008

         Duration:

I mentioned the word Mashup to my friend and I thought he was going to fly out of his seat and strangle me. This look of complete horror came over his face and he said --

You mean mangled music mixes that destroy the original track completely.

The Sacred Original Mix

I thought to myself. Wow that's an intense reaction. I realize perhaps I am not a person who fundamentally believes music is static and that there is one definitive "right" recording. My friend's mindset reminded me a lot of my Brother's hard core rock music philosophy. He grew up in the day when there was a religious fanaticism with the original master recording. Led Zepline's original version of Stairway to Heaven-- with the hidden backward masking message -- Elmo rules the dark world-- was also thrown in for good measure. (That is sarcasm btw).

My iPod Remixes Music

Here is my argument about music in 2000s. I have an iPod. It has a graphic equalization feature that fundamentally changes the frequencies in the original heavily compressed mp3 or AAC file. You could argue I have remixed the track with a new set of frequency characteristics. You could also argue that when I digitized or ripped a track from a CD or tape, I have changed the mix completely. Compression strips out lots of data from an original hi resolution recording and you can argue that the song has been mangled by the compression. Often bass becomes muddy and treble can get very tinny sounding.

Compression Remixes My Music

So with that in mind. Music is being mangled and distorted left right and centre. Digital compression has turned music into shitty sounding echos of the original recording. No wonder the world can now handle
Rihanna processed up the wazoo with digital pitch stabilization and digital tremolo added. Honestly I want to put a couple of pillows over my ears and ask them to turn off all that digital warbling.

Music is Fluid

What I have come to realize is that everyone has an opinion about good or bad music. And I think fundamentally we want to believe that there is static quality to the songs we love. It is as if they mark periods in our lives and for many people a song is an instant reminder of a time and place in their lives.

Songs are like old friends we revisit. I think therefore the idea of a song being changed on the fly digitally insult's people's sense of stability about the world. All my friends who like Mashups are people who are flexible, fluid people. Some of us just like change and some of us are afraid or shy away from Change. I have always wanted change in my life. I have risked it all many times and also failed many times. I think that this openness to change and fluidity probably pre-disposes me to enjoy music that is changed and adapted in many different ways. I see it all as part of the creative process of living with music

Are Samples of Songs Mashups?

You could also argue that Sampled songs are mini mashups. Mashups usually overlay one track with another in a mix but a song that heavily samples another track could also be called a Mashup. Sampled songs have been around since the 80s and in a way Mashups are just maxi-single versions of sampled tracks-- Extended remix samples.

Are Mashups Good For Music?

Mashups aren't going away. They are very creative ways for DJs and Video g...</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The Forgotten Side of Donna Summer

I was at one time a very loyal Donna Summer fan. I really respect her talent, class, professionalism, spirituality, and ability to stay in the music business for so long. I remember one of the many live Donna Summer concerts in a hot and steamy evening in Boston. I used to fly around seeing Donna Summer live in the 90s.

I flew down to Boston. I was a poor student at the time and my very last dollars were put into the trip. It was my Donna Summer pilgrimage where I actually met her-- without even expecting to. I ran a fan website at the time called the "Donna Summer Internet Zone". I was ahead of my time with video clips, live performances, photo gallery, concert schedule, and news. I think Club-X-Gen is my revived interest in promoting dance music in a multi-generational format. For me dance music is a positive force in my life.

Donna Summer has been around on the music scene forever. Everyone remember Donna as the Queen of Disco. A title that probably belongs more to Gloria Gaynor, if you ask me. Donna Summer was the most accessible, pop format of Disco. She was smart because this format adapted easily to New Wave music ("In Control" album) and then to dance ("Another Place and Time") and subsequently to a bunch of Remixes in the 90s ("I feel Love remixes", "Melody of Love" to name a few).

If you ever get to listen to her forgotten album "Mistaken Idenity" give it a listen. Get Ethic, a track on the album was way ahead of it's time if you ask me. It was not a big success and the album was deleted from her catalogue.

Get Ethic- from the Album Mistaken Identity

I am a gay guy, and I he always had an ethical problem with Donna Summer because of her strong religious beliefs and her negativity towards gay and lesbian individuals. I respect her beliefs, and I have not taken it personally. But I have to say- it did disappoint me. I think ultimately this caused me to step back in my 20s and I drifted away from being her fan. The Donna Summer Internet Zone died a natural death and the Official Corporate Fan site took off. I was squeezed out by corporatization and marketing-ization. I am a "start up" type of guy. I like to get things started, and I move on once the commercialization, of any venture I have done, is implemented. Hence I am not some rich corporate guy. Probably because deep down inside I am fundamentally a spiritual artistic type.

I met Donna Summer in Boston after the show. When she performs, she gives it her all, and you could see how tired she was after the show. I was introduced to her by the Bass Player in the band who became my friend, based on his emails and communication for the Donna Summer Internet Zone. I totally forget his name now but he was a very kind, sweet, charming, and real individual. His kindness and support has always stayed with me. We gave live blog comments from the road and posted them on the website. Again we were ahead of our time.

I felt very strange meeting her after the show, for a brief 1 minute. I felt like I was intruding on her time. I felt as if I had somehow interrupted her after her intense performance. To this day, I feel as if I somehow should not have been there. As if, she would have done better to go to her bus and rested. I am sure the arduous touring schedule, she has during her summer performance stints, really takes it's toll. But I was once again disappointed.

In the end I feel a strong respect and admiration for Donna Summer. I also know she suffers from depression. So do I. I often wonder if, behind all that high energy performance, there is a sad and lonely person trying to resolve some kind of spiritual task in her life.

I have been contacting Sirius for several months now and I am in a Customer Service Loop. They keep wanting me to call and then when I call they don't know why I am calling. Its fairly standard- we don't really want to listen to you behaviour. And That's Cool. There is power in a unified voice and strength in numbers. If you care, take some time to sign the petition. Your feedback means more to Sirius XM than me calling them and being put on hold.

Sign the Petition... Here's How

By signing this petition you are asking Sirius XM to add a Retro, Classic Dance Music Channel to Sirius XM Satellite Radio. The content contained within Club-X-Gen (as well as content you submit to Club-X-Gen) contitutes the playlist you want Sirius XM Satellite Radio to add to this new Channel. I am asking that both Canadians and U.S. subscribers will gain access to this new channel.

I am originally from Europe- German born but grew up in the UK. So I think I have some of that euro-pop energy embedded into my soul. I always loved Corona's stuff. She was seriously Euro-beat and her music has an accessible house sound that got me moving on the dance floor. I owned all her dance remixes and really like "I don't Wanna Be a Star". I think I am one of a small group in N. Americans that knew about her other hits in Europe at the time.

Here is a Corona Video blast. I adore the song- "Baby Baby" (why don't we just stay together- ay yay yeah). She is best known for "The Rhythm of the Night". Its a good video, so check that one out. The Rhythm of the Night was the first single from their 1994 debut album. The song was released first in 1993, then on August 5, 1994 for the remixes version.

The Barn in Toronto and Reminiscences

I used to hang out at Gay Club called The Barn on Church St in Toronto. This dance floor seriously vibrated. It is a burned out falling apart victorian building with that stench of alcohol embedded into the wooden structure. Right in the centre of the second floor was this wooden corral of gay dancing-ness. I think for me that is my favorite teeny-bopper 80s dance club of all time. It was just unpretentious and down to business.

The dance floor used to vibrate from all the dancing gay guys- me included. I was always waiting for the floor to collapse with all these gay guys plummeting down one floor, and landing in the laps of the drag queens and old guys that hung out in the bar below- called the Stables. Oh my- what a strange time that was. I recently dug up some clips from Paris is Burning- that 80s documentary on Drag Queens in New York City. It seriously reminded me of those good old days of crazy- over the top 80s-ness. (Yes I make up my own words... :-) )

You have to check out these two clips from the Movie- Paris is Burning. These Drag Balls are serious. It reminds me of mother's training their children to be pageant stars in middle America. This one guy (in the movie) is teaching women in New York city how to be real women and walk like supermodels. It is really entertaining stuff. You gotta be real...

And even longer to get up to the frozen white north of Toronto Canada (where I am stationed). So if you are European and are thinking - that is so 2007- well you would be right. I guess the Atlantic is the big North American excuse for highly filtered dance music from Europe in North America (yes I have issues).

On the positive side- Sirius BPM (Satellite Radio in North America) is finally adding more hot Euro-Dance tracks to their lineup. One of my new (which is old in Europe) favorites is Eyes Cream - Fly Away (Bye Bye)- wow intense sexual undercurrent. I love it- with the sample from Sylvester - You Make Me Feel Mighty Real. Check out his disco promo clip- its 70s, it's sassy, and boy can he give off a hot disco vibe. The clip links are below. Have to check out Sylvester. It's cheesy but this music is beyond classic- it's biblical (religious people, I used a lower case b).

Well if you are in North America and don't know what "Oh La' La' La' - 2 Eivissa" is then check out the video attached to this podcast.

http://clubxgen.com/play.php?vid=896 (or video in the Video Podcast)

I have added "Oh La' La' La' - 2 Eivissa (Extended 2007 Remix)" which is probably more true to the original version.

I was also stunned- by the depth of the lyrics ;-) but hey it's good dance music- it's supposed to be all vibe and low on having to think. It has that latino- feel the beat move your ass thing going on. Hey this is dance music - we don't need to think when we dance.

---------------------------
Oh la la la, la la la,
Oh la la la
Oh.......
.....

There is a melody bumpin' in my head
Into my life and into my dream
I see these people jumpin' in the street
And everybody just dance and sing
And everybody just dance and sing...

...
Oho
Ola
Oh la la la.....

I said, my DJ turn it up
I see this people jumpin' in the street,
They're jumpin' they're pumpin'
Oh there's a melody, all the people gonna be with me
Everybody dance with me
Everybody........

Oho

Ola
Everybody dance with me
Oho
Ola
Oh la la la la la la.......

The KLF (also known as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (aka The JAMs), The Timelords and other names) were one of the seminal bands from theBritish#160;acid house movement during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Beginning in 1987, Bill Drummond (alias King Boy D) and Jimmy Cauty (alias Rockman Rock) released hip hop-inspired and sample-heavy records as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, and on one occasion (the British number one hit single "Doctorin' the Tardis") as The Timelords. As The KLF, Drummond and Cauty pioneered the genres "stadium house" (rave music with a pop-rock production and sampled crowd noise) and "ambient house". The KLF released a series of international top-ten hits on their own KLF Communications record label, and became the biggest-selling singles act in the world for 1991. The duo also published a book, The Manual, and worked on a road movie called The White Room.
